The route
- From Sofia, the Struma motorway heads south via Pernik, Dupnitsa and Blagoevgrad.
- It passes through the Zheleznitsa tunnel, opened in February 2024: about 2 km long, the longest road tunnel built in Bulgaria.
- Leave at the Simitli junction, then take road II-19 towards Razlog, over the Predela pass.
- From Razlog, a few kilometres bring you to Bansko.
Further south, the section of the motorway between Krupnik and Kresna is not yet complete; it is not on the way to Bansko.
Bansko and the Pirin
Bansko lies at 925 m above sea level, at the foot of the Pirin range, whose highest peak, Vihren, reaches 2,914 m. Pirin National Park, more than 40,000 hectares, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983.
In winter
From 15 November to 1 March, the law requires winter tyres or a tread depth of at least 4 mm; snow chains become compulsory where sign Г19 calls for them. Set off in daylight and check road conditions before you leave. The Porsche Macan GTS, the Audi RS6 Performance and the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S have all-wheel drive.
