The former capital
Built on the hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, above the Yantra, Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1393. The Tarnovo Constitution was adopted there in 1879.
