The town
Koprivshtitsa was founded in the late 15th or early 16th century and grew during the Bulgarian Revival into a centre of learning, crafts and the struggle for independence. Declared a museum town in 1952, it has been an architectural and historical reserve since 1971 and a national architectural reserve of international importance since 1978. The Ministry of Tourism lists 388 monuments here.
On 20 April 1876, the first rifle shot fired in Koprivshtitsa and the ringing of the church bells signalled the start of the April Uprising. Several house museums are devoted to its leaders and to people born in the town: Todor Kableshkov, Georgi Benkovski, Lyuben Karavelov and the poet Dimcho Debelyanov.
Between the houses you will find more than forty carved stone fountains and small stone bridges over the Topolka and the town’s other streams. The Church of the Dormition dates from 1817, St Nicholas Church from 1842–1843.
The route
- From Sofia, take Botevgradsko Shose Boulevard, then national road 6 east towards Karlovo and Burgas, through Zlatitsa and Pirdop.
- After Pirdop, the signposted road to Koprivshtitsa turns south; the town is about a dozen kilometres further.
Allow about 110 km and 2 h 15 from central Sofia, as a guide. National road 6 is part of the vignette network, and every one of our cars already carries a vignette.

Parking
We found no parking rules published by Koprivshtitsa Municipality. The centre is a maze of narrow cobbled lanes between high walls: park on the edge of the centre, following the signs, and explore on foot.
Driving tips
Leave Sofia in the morning to make the most of the museums, which close in the late afternoon. From 15 November to 1 March, winter rules apply (winter tyres or at least 4 mm of tread), as explained in our winter driving guide. If you continue to Plovdiv, about 90 km away, our Plovdiv guide will help you plan the visit.
With our cars
We hand over the car in Sofia or at the airport, for a day or longer. Koprivshtitsa, the Sredna Gora and Plovdiv fit well into two days; our cars stay in Bulgaria.
