Drink-driving in Bulgaria

Bulgarian law sets a limit of 0.5‰ of alcohol in the blood. Above it, penalties rise quickly: licence suspension, then criminal prosecution. Here is what the legislation provides.

Key points

  • Driving is prohibited above 0.5‰ of alcohol in the blood, or after drug use.
  • From 0.5 to 0.8‰: a fine and licence suspension for 6 months.
  • From 0.8 to 1.2‰: a fine and licence suspension for 12 months.
  • Above 1.2‰, or after drug use: a criminal offence.

The limit: 0.5‰

The Road Traffic Act prohibits driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 0.5 per mille, or after using narcotic drugs or their analogues. For drugs, there is no threshold.
